He graduated from the Conservatory “Giovan Battista Martini” in Bologna, with top marks, and from the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Stuttgart. Since 1993 he has been First Bassoon and Solo Bassoon of I Solisti Veneti. He was First Bassoon of the Gran Teatro la Fenice in Venice for twenty years and since 2017 he has held the same role at the BBC Philarmonic. He has won numerous awards including those in Cesena, Taranto, Meda and Stresa. He is a member of the Quintetto Bibiena with which he has won numerous national and international awards including Second Prize (First Prize not awarded) at the 42nd Internationaler Musikwettbewerb in Munich and the Abbiati Critics' Award. As a soloist he has performed Vivaldi's Bassoon Concertos at the world's most prestigious venues, including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Lincoln Center in New York, the Palau de la Musica in Barcelona, the Salle Pleyel in Paris and the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. He has worked as Principal Bassoon with many major orchestras including the Filarmonica del Teatro alla Scala, the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai and the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana. He has made regular radio and television broadcasts for RAI, Radio France, Bayerische Rundfunk, Suddeutscher Rundfunk, Radio Vaticana and Radio Svizzera Italiana. His discography includes Vivaldi's Bassoon Concertos with I Solisti Veneti (Warner), Mozart's Bassoon Concerto K 191 (Agorà), a double CD of 14 Vivaldi Bassoon Concertos (Tactus), a program of Opera Arias (original transcriptions) for bassoon and piano (Tactus), a CD of 19th-century French music for bassoon and piano (Warner) and three CDs with Il Quintetto Bibiena (Aura and Agorà). He has taught Bassoon at the “Benedetto Marcello” Conservatory of Music in Venice, at the “Orazio Vecchi” Music Institute in Modena, at the “Cesare Pollini” Conservatory in Padua, at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Since 2019 he has been Professor of Bassoon at the Royal College of Music in London. He has held master classes at numerous Italian and international institutes.
